1769-1832

From "We Are The Land: A History of Indigenous California" (2021, Akins/Bauer)

" Perhaps it was summer, before the Quechnajuichom (also known as the People of Quechla) harvested acorns, when the not (hereditary leader) of Quechla observed eight Sosabitom (Spanish) approaching.  The Sosabitom previously visited Quechla and convinced some of the not's relatives to move to new places, namely Mission San Dieog de Alcala, Mission San Juan Capistrano, and Mission San Gabriel Arcangel

In the late eighteenth century, Indigenous Peoples living in coastal California encountered Spanish missionaries, soldiers and government officials who intended to settle the region.  Initially, Indigenous People attempted to form customary political and economic relationships with the Spanish, much like how they had responded to the Spanish and English sailors who preceded them.  But the Spanish who invaded California after 1769 differed from those who explored the coast or the Colorado River. Spanish settler colonial policy attempted to separate Indigenous People from the land and each other and, in doing do, altered California's social and ecological makeup.  Spanish missionaries believed in "reducing" Indigenous People from their allegedly "wild and primitive" state to what the Spanish considered more "civilized" missions."  (Pp 64-65)
